Position Summary

The responsibilities for this position will include some or all of the following: teaching, student advising, service and cooperative extension and administrative responsibilities. Your responsibilities may include involvement in off-campus, evening or weekend duties, as well as student recruitment, retention and placement efforts. Because each school employs somewhat different descriptions of some of these elements, your department head or dean will supply you with your policy. Your academic department may also provide you with more specific set of job expectations.


Ph.D. in related field plus two years college teaching experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Demonstrated mastery of subject matter or discipline.

Demonstrated ability to teach and evaluate undergraduate students.

Knowledge and experience in some aspect of public history

Familiarity with instructional techniques designed to reach students of varying preparation levels and abilities.

Excellent communication skills are essential and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, service and technology application in the classroom.

All courses require strong technology and organizational skills and experience working with Blackboard or a similar platform.

Physical Requirements

Position may require sitting or standing for long periods of time. Position requires the ability to speak clearly and effectively for an extended period of time. Position requires additional hours for meeting and events, including evening; some weekend meetings may be required.

Essential Functions

Teaching responsibilities include time spent in the classroom, laboratory, or telecommunications courses and immediate preparation for them; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught; preparing teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies and practical exercises; reviewing written examinations and papers; evaluating presentations; and supervising independent study projects. Professional peer review is an essential feature of effective teaching.

University service includes service on the Faculty Council, school and departmental committees.

Professional service implies the use of academic and professional expertise to serve your profession, the University, and the community.

Cooperative extension includes identifying current needs, adapting research results into contemporary language, presenting research-supported information and education to the people of the state, providing leadership in identifying and presenting cutting-edge technology in their discipline, developing interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving, and collaborating with research and teaching faculty to stay current in their fields.

Administrative responsibilities include writing syllabi, grading course work, submitting final grades.

Collegiality, as well as professional and ethical conduct, enhances teaching, learning and the general reputation of all persons in the academy. Therefore, all faculty members are expected to serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public.

Contribute to a community of educators by participating in professional development activities offered by the Department, University, and/or professional organizations.
